Qualities in good friends February 14, 2013

Wow. It’s been a long time since I have written a blog post! Today is Valentine’s Day or Singles Awareness Day as it’s called. I have never been a big fan of this day, even though every year since college I have had a great time hanging out with friends, going out to dinner and watching movies. As a single person I still do struggle with not being bitter about the overblown display of hearts, candy, and stuffed animals that bombard you every time you enter a store around this time of the year. Is is really necessary to have five aisles of Valentine’s stuff? Seriously?

This year, I have decided to focus on the amazing family and friends God has blessed me with. I have a lot of love in my life even though I am not dating someone.

Lately I have been thinking a lot about how thankful I am for my awesome friendships. I truly believe God has put these people in my life, and I am so thankful for them. Friends who are older, friends who are younger, guy friends, girl friends, single friends, married friends, friends from church, friends I just happened to meet—they all have a special place in my heart. I know my life is much richer because of these friendships, and I am so grateful. Having these relationships in my life makes me think about the qualities that make a good friend. These are qualities I have found in my friends and hope I have exhibited in return.

Good friends love you for who you are, but they continuously push you to become a better person.

Good friends laugh and cry with you.

Good friends will call you out when you need it.

Good friends listen and offer advice. Sometimes they just listen.

Good friends encourage you.

Good friends always tell you the truth.

Good friends hold you accountable.

Good friends are always there for you, no matter what.

Good friends enjoy just hanging out and spending time with you.
